Differences are small but they do suggest that older-age counties are beginning to expand into areas with greater economic challenges and fewer resources needed to support older residents. As older-age counties diversify in this manner, it is likely harder to describe rural aging in terms of just two dominant migration-related narratives. What follows is an analysis of changes in demographic processes underlying aging in nonmetro areas as a whole since 1980 and in six case study regions chosen to represent different types of rural aging scenarios.
